Simply put, an MFM specialist is an OBGYN physician who has completed an additional two to three years of education and training beyond the traditional OBGYN residency. These specialists are high-risk pregnancy experts who typically work with pregnant women with chronic health problems or women who face unexpected problems during pregnancy, such as early labor or high blood pressure. In other cases where the baby may be the one who faces unforeseen circumstances, an MFM specialist can provide monitoring and treatments before birth to support babies until they are ready to arrive in the world.
